Getting non-Apple (AX88772) USB Ethernet to work on Mavericks 27

UPDATE 11/29: Seems Asix’s latest drivers work right after install, so you no longer need to do the steps below. Just download the Mac OS X 10.9 drivers from here and install as normal.

I just upgraded my Macbook Air to OS X Mavericks and found out that my trusty (non-Apple and super cheap) USB Ethernet adapter no longer works. It was a bit tricky to get it running again so I thought I’d post it up here in case anyone else had the same trouble.

It seems most non-Apple USB Ethernet adapters use the same chipset, a variant of the AX88772 chips. You can check if your USB Ethernet has this chipset by plugging in opening up System Information (Under the Application/Utilities folder) and mavigating to the Hardware->USB pane on the left. You’ll see something like AS88772B. Click it and if the pane in the bottom contains

AX88772B:

  Product ID: 0x772b
Vendor ID: 0x0b95 (ASIX Electronics Corporation)

Then you’re good to go and these steps should get you up and running. If it’s similar but slightly different numbers you may as well give it a shot.

If you’re an expert here’s the quick version:

  • Uninstall old drivers
  • Repair permissions (maybe not needed)
  • Install the drivers.
  • do: kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

And in more detail:

  1. Uninstall any existing drivers

There should be an uninstall.sh file you can doubleclick on your previous driver install CD.

  2. Repair permissions

Open up Disk Utility (under /Applications/Utilities) click over to your hard drive’s ‘First Aid’ tab and choose Repair Permissions.

  3. Install the latest ASIX AX88772 drivers

    They are available here.

  4. Restart
  5. When you boot back up enter the following command at the command prompt:

    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

  6. Open up System Preferences Network pane and add a USB Ethernet interface

This is done by clicking the little plus sign at the lower left of the Network pane.

That’s it! With a little luck your USB Ethernet adapter should already have turned Green and be working correctly.

Your solution worked for me. Thank you!

However, the page you linked http://plugable.com/2013/10/22/before-you-upgrade-to-mac-os-x-10-9-mavericks says that Marericks includes drivers for this chipset…

And actually we really need nothing to get it working…

    Hey!

I got a Lenovo USB Ethernet Adapter for my MacBook Air but it won’t work. I cannot add any usb-devices to my network panel. Only thunderbolt.

What can I do? I tried to repair permissions and uninstalled old drivers, but it wont work.

Strange. For me, my USB Ethernet adapter 0×7720:0x0b95 worked right OOB without installing driver. Mac OS 10.9.92

    Thanks!
In my case I was mislead by the known SMB issue with Mavericks, and troubleshooted slow SMB performance to my NAS for weeks. (including Upgrades of my QNAP NAS, switching the MAC to SMB1, etc.) At the end your technote saved my day, as this was related to the USB Ethernet Adapter Driver.

The only thing I had to do is to install the driver, and since then SMB communication to my NAS works like a charm.

    Osx version 10.9.2
    Driver AX88772C_772B_772A_760_772_Macintosh_10.5_to_10.9_Driver_Installer_v2.0.0

I followed you installation process in toto, but at the end i cannot see any USB Ethernet Adapter. Nor in System preferences, the AX88772 is recognized as new USB hardware when plugged.
    1- Fixing permissions
    2- Installation
    3- Reboot
    4- Sudo kextload….

    Any Solution?

Same problem like a Marco – solution doesn’t work, Mavericks 10.9.2, AX88772B dongle from ASUS Ultrabook, PID 0x7e2b, VID 0x0b95.

MBP 15″ Retina with Nvidia GPU
    OSX 10.9.3
    USB Ethernet Adapter Chipset AX88772B
    Verified as original

Option to add Ethernet Adapter in Network Preferences available
Nothing happens when “create” is clicked!
Even tried editing IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contets/Plugins/AppleUSBEthernet.kext as per post at http://www.osx86.net/topic/7673-tipskexts-and-deviceids/?p=65383
    But nothing! Nada. Zilch.

What cheap usb ethernet connector are you actually using?

  17. Reply Ansar Jul 3, 2014 5:47 am

I think people who has problem ever after following this steps is may due to non-asix oroduct which claim to be asix one … check your product ID and vendor ID in hardware info under sys preference…. mine says 0×9200: 0xe202 and this isnt an asix PID and VID ….cos i just purchased a MBA A1466 last week with pre-updated 10.9.2 .. 2 days back bought 1 5$ USB to Ethernet adapter including CD driver … it said it has AX88772A,B,TL9200
the problem was this driver is compatible upto 10.8 only …. so i had to download asix driver v2.2.0 (10.5-10.9) and still it wasn’t recognised…
    so any solutions ppl?

Applied some old knowledge to this new challenge an just got my Lenovo adapter to work. It required some kext editing.

  19. Reply KBV Sep 29, 2014 4:40 pm

your adapter may worked after you edit the kext file and add in your device id/vendor id. I was playing around with some Lenovo USB net dongle which did not work nor did it power it up. Once I edited the kext, it powered up and is working normally.

Thanks for the information. There is an easier way by simply downloading the driver from the chipset developer site: http://www.asix.com.tw/products.php?op=pItemdetail&PItemID=86;71;101&PLine=71

It worked for me with my AirLink 101 USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter. (Mac OS X 10.8.5)

Just scroll down until the driver section.
